November Wrap-Up: Movember
🇨🇦 This article was originally published on the Toronto Travel Massive blog
Last week was Toronto Travel Massive’s last tweetup of an incredible 2012! As is now customary for an end of year get-together, the focus wasn’t so much on travel blogging discussions, but more on socializing, having a few drinks and celebrating our achievements over the past year.
Being ‘Movember’ month around the world, it was also the perfect opportunity for us to use our networking and social media reach to promote this amazing fund-raising event which is sky-rocketing in take-up, awareness and its fund-raising abilities. Organized by Matt Polowyk (@drunkntrvlr) and Gillian Anderson (@oneblondechef), our travel blogging community became Mo Bros and Mo Sistas for the night.
For those who could, there were even MoBro’s amongst us who made noble attempts at growing their ‘stache during November. For those who couldn’t, fake mo’s were on hand to ensure everyone was enjoying the mo-ment during the night. We also had lots and lots of prizes given away during the night, including prizes for ‘Man of Movember’, ‘Miss Movember’ for best fake mo amongst the Mo Sistas, lamest Mo and some incredible prizes in the raffles, very kindly donated by a variety of sponsors in aide of Movember (not sure if you want them listed).
There was also a speech from Jim, a prostate cancer survivor who has now been clear of cancer for 10 years, who inspired the audience with his determination to fight the disease as he ‘still had too many people to piss off! lol! What surprises most people is that prostate cancer kills more people than breast cancer every year. Men are sometimes too stubborn to see the doctor when there is something wrong. Not only that, but men who get cancer are 4 times more likely to commit suicide. Movember is a great fund-raising drive not only to discuss physical, but also men’s mental health. As Matt pointed out at the end of the night, the fund-raising is great, but what is perhaps more important is for people to have the discussions because that is what really matters and will ultimately lead to more men going to the doctor’s and getting checked out when they have concerns.
At Toronto Travel Massive, we are delighted to be in a position to facilitate this, with fund-raising and improving awareness on social media 🙂
Big thank-you to our sponsors for the evening and to everyone in attendance. Not only did everyone go home with goodie bags, but some great prizes were raffled off including gift packs from Flight Centre, Ontario Tourism, Google Canada, Intrepid Travel, My Adventure Store, G Adventures, Jaunt.ca, Car2Go, Hailo, OneBlondeChef, Coconut Water and more!

Have a great holiday break and hope to see you at a meetup in the new year!
