In the City: Milan, Italy

One of the world’s most important marketplaces for creativity, art, and design is now a Travel Massive city. Say “Benvenuto” to Milan, Italy.

We caught up with new chapter leader and local resident to learn more about this Italian hotspot.

Milan Travel Massive

Congrats on leading the latest chapter! What makes your city so unique?

It’s got great buzz with a big English speaking community present and already a growing community of travellers and travel professionals in our Facebook group.

Is there a good time of year to visit Milan?

May or June when it’s not too hot. Locals vacation in the month of August so the city is empty.

What surprises people most about Milan?

In just 15 minutes by bicycle you can be in the countryside.

We can’t forget Milan is the fashion capital of the world. Can you give us any stylish fashion tips?

Yes, we are! Fortunately, not all of Milan is a runway. I still prefer to hit the bar by night in comfort. Keep it easy, fun and no need to overdo it.

Some say Milanese are hard to warm up to. How do you make friends with the locals?

Shake hands with Milan folks. Don’t be intimidated by the first glance they cast at you when you talk to them in a bar. Pour more wine and keep talking, they’ll open up!

Take us into the minds of people living in Milan. Is there a local issue close to the hearts of the people here?

Public transportation is a recurring issue. It shuts down too early at night forcing more cars on the road and pollution. The locals really want to improve transit. There needs to be a better plan that lets people leave their cars at home.

Best travel tip for visiting Milan?

Take Sunday off to explore Parco Sud. Get a bicycle!

Best local food or restaurant?

My gramma’s.

Best local drink or bar?

Birrificio Lambrate or Vineria in Navigli area.

Best local neighbourhood to explore?

Navigli. Especially at night.

Best spots to get off the beaten track?

Quartiere Isola, Lambrate or Parco Sud.

Best cultural tradition?

La Balera. These places are hyper-local and not easy to find for tourists. It’s a summer outdoor disco where locals share in aperitivo, a good ol’ game of bocce, and laughs with friends. I cannot give justice to what a “Balera” is in a few lines. You just have to experience it!

Important words travellers should know when visiting your city?

Un caffé, per favore. Coffee please.

What is your best etiquette tip – is there a strange practice travellers should know about?

I am going to ask every traveller a favor: as long as you are in Italy, please do not order a Cappuccino after having had lunch or dinner.
