6 Steps to Building a Plan for a Location Independent Lifestyle

More and more people are moving away from the corporate desk to a lifestyle that is shaped and created the way they want. Daily routines dependent on managers and higher-ups are slowly dwindling away and new entrepreneurs with innovative ideas are taking off. After a 14-year career Liisa Vexler was one of them. In 2012, she quit her corporate career in health for the digital world and moved her husband and two kids to Costa Rica. She is now the founder of the Family Freedom Project helping others do the same by removing the constraints of location & time to live how and where they want. We caught up with Liisa for her expert tips on designing happiness and building a location independent life. Plus, we got a cool new giveaway of her e-book for two lucky readers!

1. Define your dream: If you don’t know what you want, you can never get it. Do you envision yourself on a beach with toes in the sand full-time? Or do you simply want the flexibility to spend more time with your loved ones? Write down your goal with specifics. Seeing them in print helps to make them more concrete.

2. Identify obstacles in your way: What is stopping you from getting where you want to go? In The Family Freedom Project, we talk a lot about pinpointing the type of obstacles in your way as a means of getting past them. Once you know what you’re up against, you can create a plan of attack.

3. Create a plan: You know what you want and you know what it is standing in your way. Now, develop a plan, with timelines and specific steps that will get you to your goal. Do you need to save money? Do you need to build a freelance business? All these are possible, but they take planning.

4. Streamline your life: Want to travel light through life, without all the baggage? Get rid of the excess stuff! This will clear space in your mind for your plans for the future, not to mention give you some extra cash to get to your goal faster.

5. Embrace decision-making: When you create a plan you have to make decisions. Sometimes they are hard ones to make, like quitting a job that is a safe source of income. Keep the goal in sight. Each decision is bringing you closer.

6. Adjust and re-adjust the plan: The plan you write on day one is going to need editing along the way. If you get a little off-track, re-adjust the plan and get back on course. This is all part of the journey that makes the result all the sweeter.

To help you build your own plan for a more location independent lifestyle, we teamed up with the Family Freedom Project to give away TWO (2) copies of Liisa Vexler’s new e-book, A Step‐by‐Step Guide to Living Abroad with Kids. From Dream to Plan to Reality. Learn how to create your happiness and overcome obstacles, get lifestyle design and decision-making advice plus tips on housing, healthcare, and budgeting.
