Six short stories curated by Oliver Puhe and based on AMADEUS  shows six current tourist’s characters and their perceived needs when travelling. For each of them, Olli gave practical examples of how some tourism stakeholders are going the extra mile by using technology to cater each niche needs. The following points provide a short description of each.

Story 1: #transmediastorytelling

This story and video relate to the involvement of tourists and tourism boards. The importance of transmedia story telling is growing and smaller stories, more personable stories are becoming more relevant to consumers today.

Examples: Swiss Tourism / Graubünden VIDEO:

Learnings: posters and static media are simply not enough for this kind of travelers anymore

Story 2: #visualsearch

The way people book vacations today relies heavily on their visual search. This YouTube clip features an entertaining Aruba promotion as they point out that more than 12 different countries have used their Aruba stock images to feature their own locations, thus proving Aruba really does that the most beautiful beaches.

Example: Aruba proves to have the best beaches in the Caribbean, VIDEO:

Learnings: Discover opportunities of things that happen anyway

Story 3: #connectedexperience

A connected experience has now proven that there is no difference between virtual connections and reality. This video features THE VOID, a new dimension and experience where you can fight in intergalactic words, slash aliens on earth and really only limits you by imagination. THE VOID is the future of entertainment, a virtual reality and a new way to enjoy entertainment.

Example: The Void, VIDEO:

Learnings: (Virtual) gaming and the possibility of its use in tourism

Story 4: #smartservice

To provide smart service is all about having the ability to feel rich with culture, luxury, comfort, and practicality. In this TAXI Stockholm clip you get insight into their new ‘podcab’ which takes travelers and tourists on a new and unique, never been seen before experience. Now that’s smart service.

Example: TAXI Stockholm, VIDEO:

Learnings: Practical way of exploring the city and getting great insights

Story 5: #contextawareness

It is so important to be aware and conscious of the decisions that you make it life. With travel, it takes preparation, time, money and a strong combination of work/life balance to get to where you want to go.

In this clip, the Imagination Machine showcases and new and innovative virtual plane that allows a persons mind to control the gears. The more people could focus on their dreams, the more likely they would reach the destination.

Example: S7 Airlines: Imagination Machine, VIDEO:

Learnings: anyone wants to experience something, regardless if poor or rich in time and money

Story 6: #fairdeal

What is fair for the traveller, what is fair for the destination? A deal needs to be made ahead of your travel plans in order to make each stay as remarkable as you imagined while also sustainable for nature and the local communities.

In this Cape Town Facebook Trip video, they showcase the unique ways to embrace ‘off the path’ destination while taking lucky Facebook users virtually across all the hidden gems of Cape Town.

Example: CAPE TOWN FB Trip, VIDEO:

This clip launched from Spain shows fairness from the consumers perspective. Often times, today people feel ripped off and cheated while on vacation, going to the local cinema or buying food at a restaurant. This Pay Per Laugh idea generated remarkable results and even more money for the businesses.

Pay Per Laugh Spain, VIDEO:

Learnings: fair does not mean that there is no fun

So what is all that telling us?

Our world, tourists and the way of traveling are changing right now. So far we can decide how much we want to know about those changes, but at one point we will be surrounded or even be part of it – just like this. We want to participate and not just watch, so each one of us should think about how our own personal- and our business-life are affected. It is already very exciting or what do you think?
