Best Responsible Tourism Blog Goes to Uncornered Market

This year at the World Travel Market (WTM) in London, England, there were various World Responsible Tourism Awards being rewarded to successful bloggers and businesses from across the world. We are proud to announce that Travel Massive members Audrey Scott and Daniel Noll from Uncornered Market have won the award for the best responsible tourism blog. In order to get into the minds of this inspiring couple, we asked Audrey a few questions.

How does this award influence your business?

The World Responsible Tourism Award for Best Responsible Tourism Blog brings an additional level of credibility and authority to our discussions with all clients, regardless if those conversations are about our consulting servicesspeaking engagements or brand ambassadorships. Unfortunately, the word “blog” does not always carry with it the best reputation in the travel industry. This award not only shows a level of professionalism for our blog, but is also recognizes the important role that blogs can play in advocacy work and directly impacting consumers’ actions and decisions.  Of course, it’s a particular draw for businesses targeting sustainability and the responsible travel-aware consumer market. And this additional stamp of professionalism and imprimatur from a panel of authoritative voices in responsible / sustainable travel has already resulted in a couple of new conversations, too.

How did it feel after receiving this award?

Our first reaction was surprise, for the company of finalists we were in was impressive. Beyond that, we were honored and delighted. It’s a satisfying feeling to be recognized for years of work and advocacy for issues important to us and that we believe to the travel industry as a whole. In the award description, we were heartened to see the panel of judges call out our focus on the human dimension of travel, offbeat destinations and the storytelling aspects of our work (see quote below).
“One thing that makes Uncornered Market stand out as a responsible travel blog is that people, not just place, are always at the centre of their writing. It is clear that Audrey and Dan want to give voice to people who don’t always have one, particularly in far flung destinations. Or ‘uncornered markets’. This is part of their aim to dispel stereotypes and fears among tourists, particularly from their predominantly American following, and thus assure readers that travel is a force for good, and not to be scared of. Not only is the writing strong and engaging, their stories about people they meet are thought provoking and, most importantly, make you want to travel to a place and meet the subjects of their stories too.”
The school kids in a village outside of Kalaw all wanted to shake Dan's hand. Taken along our trek from Kalaw to Inle Lake, Burma (Myanmar).

Is there anything else you’d like to tell Travel Massive readers?

Coincidentally, earlier this year just before the call for applications was announced, we performed a stock-taking exercise that resulted in this page on our website: A Manifesto in Progress: The Art of Traveling the World…for Good.  Looking back, that exercise was an important step in articulating our values, our motivation, and the results of that work — not only for us, but also for our audience and colleagues.
Not only does an exercise like that help set you up to apply for awards like these, but it helps reinforce the purpose and meaning of your work.
