Alketa’s Quick Tips to Tirana

In this edition of, In the City, we profile not just a city, but the entire country of Albania. We catch up with Alketa Halilaj journalist and chapter leader of Albania Travel Massive to learn more about her home country and get tips on what to see and do from a local.

How long have you lived in this city?

I have been living in Tirana the capital of Albania for 10 years now. Previously, I used to live with my family in Tropoja northern city in Albania.

What makes your city so awesome and unique?

Tirana is a city full of life, opportunities and hundreds of sunny days. It is developing rapidly and currently is one of the favourite cities to visit by tourists coming from Western Europe cities and the USA. Albania is still considered an undiscovered tourism destination in the European continent making it a very unique travel experience.

What surprises people most about your city?

The high number of youth roaming the streets and the numerous sunny days we have in the city. The rapid rate of change the city goes through in many aspects and the hospitality of its citizens is always a big surprise for most travellers who visit Albania.

Are there any myths or misconceptions about your city, people, custom, or culture?

Yes. Most people say Albania carries a bad reputation in the eyes of developed countries’ citizens. This is due to problems related to crime and corruption in the past years which have given the city a negative reputation. However, what people don’t read into is that things have changed, and Tirana is a very peaceful city which gets thousands of visitors each year.

Is there a social, political or environmental issue at the heart of your city which people want to drive change to?

As every city in the world, Tirana has its own problems as well. One of the main problems is the city traffic and the air pollution which are considered as problematic issues. If you’re a traveller coming to visit Albania, there are many ways you can help support our economy including sustainable and eco traveller where you come to experience the culture, but really leave nothing but footprints

Best sustainable travel tips for visiting your city?

Be spontaneous, respect others and visit many of our unique cultural centres (don’t forget to visit the Pyramid).

Best local food or restaurant?

Sofra e Ariut restaurant is a Tirana classic. It serves Albanian and international cuisine and its interior design showcase the national symbols of Albania’s culture and tradition. You’ll even get a friendly welcome from the staff who are festively dressed up in our countries colours and cultural outfits. 

Best local drink or bar?

Fusion Lounge (At Aba Center) in front of Qemal Stafa stadium. It is a great place for delicious food and affordable drinks. This is a popular place for university and graduates to visit on weekends and evenings.

Best local neighbourhood to explore and why?

Farka lake. The perfect place to have a picnic in a wonderful natural habitat.

Best local festival(s) or event(s) people should experience?

Beer Fest in Korca southeast city, a three day festival where people drink a lot of beer. This is the largest event in Albania thanks to the incredible music lineups, international beer brands and free entrance! Opening in 2007, Korca Beer fest is quickly gaining popularity across the Balkans and Eastern Europe. 

Best time of year to visit and why?

The best time of year to visit Albania is in the Spring. During the months of March, April and May we have a wonderful climate with sunny days and warm temperatures. The evenings are pleasurably cooler and the days are warm enough to walk around in a t-shirt and shorts.
