Explore The Minoan Tastes of Crete

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jerolyn E. Morrison of Minoan Tastes and part of our Travel Massive Crete Chapter. Jerolyn helps travellers to experience the kitchen, cuisine and landscape of Minoan Crete by preparing a meal in ceramic Minoan-style cooking pots over the hearth fire.

What inspired you to create this startup?

As an archaeologist and potter working on Crete, I was being asked by various members in the East Cretan community to organize Minoan cooking demonstrations and events for educational and tourism purposes. After a period of time, people from around Greece and those visiting international began asking for dinners and events. One thing brought the other and Minoan Tastes was formed.

What is your startup about?

Crete is famous for its food, edible landscape, and cultural history. A large portion of the tourism on the island comes from travellers love for food and exploring different cultural cuisines. My team’s expertise in all of these areas allowed us to develop a specific program that merges these topics and talents.

How did you get your startup off the ground and gaining traction?

Minoan Tastes organizes and executes numerous social and educational programs for the local community and travellers through the year that are pro bono. These events captured local and international press that wanted to tell our story. I believe that our willingness to form a bond between our program and our local community increased our business. Plus, we LOVE what we do!

Do you have any tips for new entrepreneurs who want to create a successful startup?

Be kind, be honest, do not be greedy, and love the people in your life as much as you love your work.

How do you think we can be better travellers?

By remembering our place in the world by being respectful of people we meet and new places we are exploring.

If you could book a ticket tomorrow, where would you go?

To Australia to meet an Aboriginal potter who sent me one of her gorgeous vessels via a new friend.
