Copenhagen Travel Massive Is Now Here

Our Copenhagen chapter is growing slowly but steadily, which is typical Danish behaviour. After the initial 12-15 sign ups, I noticed that almost all members of the Copenhagen chapter are bloggers, something I myself know very little about, and so I decided to host a pre-event, or pilot, to get to know this segment better, and understand what kind of events would be interesting to our members.

I should say that I have a background in hotel tourism and later developed a social distribution travel startup. I am currently working on another travel tech startup, doing a PMS (performance management system) for the accommodation industry. This means that my initial idea for Copenhagen Travel Massive was a focus on travel tech, travel apps and online travel and tourism.

On the 5th of November, I had booked the bar/restaurant area of Copenhagen hipster hostel Urban House, and sent out some invites.
Though only 4 people signed up, we ended up being 7 in total, and many wrote to me, offering their assistance in future events.

The topics of discussion were:

1. Getting to know each other. All attendees were travel bloggers, apart from myself. One blogger was also a tour guide. There was only one Danish person, the rest were from Canada, Turkey, US, UK and Chile.

2. The state of the Copenhagen travel industry. Almost all members agreed that the scene is very closed and difficult to penetrate as an outsider. Many had contacted or offered their services to e.g. Wonderful Copenhagen, Visit Denmark and others, but nothing had come from it.

3. Problems for bloggers. New monetization models, the lack of understanding what travel bloggers can do for your business, and how to work with bloggers, particularly in Denmark.

4. Ideas for future events. The overall attitude was, that a mix of travel industry professionals and marketeers in a casual networking setup would be optimal. Topics and speakers are secondary to most members, although social media ranks high.

Turnout was higher than expected, considering the total number of members. Many were interested, but had other plans. I managed to have a good understanding of what is of interest to bloggers, and got some great ideas to pursue for the first “real” event.
