How did you first get involved with Travel Massive?

I was at a local travel and tourism conference about Edinburgh Blogmanay last December and a blogger was talking about Travel Massive and the events he’d been to around the world. He explained the benefits and opportunities these events brought to tourism professionals. This was something that appealed to me and I decided I would try and start up an Edinburgh chapter.

What motivates you to be part of Travel Massive?

The events that we hold allow people to connect and share ideas from all areas of travel and tourism. I hope that members from the Edinburgh chapter will connect with other chapters around the world and build some fantastic new relationships. The best thing about Travel Massive is that anyone who is interested and involved in travel and tourism is welcome, so we get a great mix of industry professionals attending. This is what makes us stand out from the other groups.

What makes your city a great place for meet-ups?

Edinburgh has a very active travel and tourism community. ETAG (Edinburgh Tourism Action Group) have been extremely supportive of Travel Massive and have been helping us promote our events to the local industry. The local travel and tourism industry is very open to new ideas and initiatives.

Have you acquired any partnerships or professional opportunities from being a part of the community?

Yes, I have established some great relationships with local businesses. The Travel Massive events we hold allow plenty of opportunity for networking which I think is hugely valuable.

Do you have a favourite event from the past?

I think I would have to say the most recent event we held in December was my favourite event. It was a charity event where we asked members to donate prizes to raise money for Bloodwise and Ward 8 at the Western General Edinburgh Hospital. This charity was close to our hearts as a group as we all know someone who has been affected by Lukemia. We received over 40 prizes and raised over £1000 on the night of the event. We also asked people to add their suggestions for 2016 events onto the cardboard Christmas tree and myself and Lesley were approached by a number of businesses keen to host and sponsor next year which is fantastic.

What is your best advice to a newcomer who wants to attend a Travel Massive event for the first time?

Just come with an open mind and take advantage of the networking opportunities, you never know who you may meet and how you may work together.

Leader of the Pack is a monthly series that profiles the organizers and leaders of Travel Massive chapters around the world. You can get in touch with Katy on Travel Massive.
