There were a number of people in attendance of which included travel bloggers, social media experts, tour guides, hotel owners, web agencies and marketing experts.

Sicily’s treasured archaeological sites told the story of the ancient origins of the island and offered the chance to dive into the history of Mediterranean civilization. However, most visitors are usually attracted by the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento, the ancient ruins in Siracusa or the Villa Romana del Casale in Piazza Armerina, missing the chance to visit less known archaeological gems which often make visitors feel like an explorer on the Grand Tour discovering a bronze age village hidden behind the wild Sicilian vegetation.

TRECKING

We talked about the way we can promote less known locations like this and promote tourists in Sicily to enjoy off-the-beaten-track archaeological sites in a thrilling and engaging way.

Since many of these sites are surrounded by wild vegetation including herbs and greens that we use in our traditional recipes, food was also brought up in the discussion as an essential element in any tour of the island. How we could get people aware of these traditions while visiting an archeological site got everyone really excited, probably also because we were already enjoying a well earned nibble after an hour trekking around the canyon.

We also looked at the way a potential increase in the number of visitors might impact the landscape and the archeological treasures. Starting from this point, we then talked about sustainable tourism in general, a topic of great interest to all our chapter members.

Overall, the event was a great success, and not only did the attendees enjoy the event, but many of those who could not make it this time have asked me if it is possible to repeat the event.
