What is your initiative about? Who does it help?

The PATA Global Insight Conference is about the future. It’s about innovation, disruption, thought leadership and exploring the changing dynamics being increasingly driven by influences outside of our usual peripheral vision.

The themes around PGIC  are designed to dovetail into the New Zealand Tourism Industry’s 2025 strategic plan. This year’s theme is ‘Exploring Connectivity’ and we have again brought an amazing line up of international speakers to share their wisdom/knowledge/expertise.

What inspired you to create this initiative?

There is a growing need to have a better understanding on how the tourism industry will develop in the future and how disruption will continually drive these changes. Following the release of the NZ 2025 tourism plan, we saw an opportunity to bring knowledge and insight from high level international speakers to New Zealand to provide better understanding and context on future development.

Is there a unique story of how it came to be?

The concept of PGIC came from the Brisbane G20 Summit where PATA was tasked with developing the tourism conference programme. This was designed to shine lights on the changing dynamics of the global tourism industry. This also coincided with the launch of the NZ 2025 Tourism plan leading towards the current close collaborations.

What has been your biggest success or accomplishment?

Our first event in 2015 had over 200 local and international delegates registered. 78 percent of the delegates were from New Zealand. We managed to connect Destination Marketing Organisations (31%), Industry Leaders (31%), Aviation Personnels (9%) and others like hoteliers and institutions.

The event was widely reported as being the most important, influencial and dynamic tourism conference held in NZ in the past 40 years.

What do you hope your initiative will accomplish in the next 2-5 years?

We hope that this event can become a roaming event in the Pacific region and beyond to engage with a wider group of industry players.

Why do you attend Travel Massive events? What benefits have you seen from being a part of Travel Massive events and community?

I’ve attended a few Travel Massive events and find them inspirational and engaging. A great way to connect with local industry players under a casual setting, building relationships.
