Travel Video Insiders: Mike Corey

This week as part of our travel video series we’re featuring biologist and film-maker Mike Corey. Mike shared with us his latest work diving in Tulamben in Indonesia and a few video tips.

Forward from Ian. I was lucky enough to meet Mike in Australia about five years ago when Travel Massive had one chapter based at an infamous backpacker dive bar. We hung out and over a few drinks in Sydney’s (now shut down) Kings Cross, Mike told me his serious ambition to get into travel film. I’ve followed his journey ever since, and it’s an honor to have him on our blog to share some of his insights.

Mike aptly describes himself as a “Breakdancing Marine Biologist turned Travel YouTuber” – he’s the resident travel film maker at Kick the Grind and a member of the Travel Massive Toronto chapter.

What got you into travel?

I found my path through travel and after a transformative experience in Indonesia, I realized that everything I thought I knew was just one small perspective of a very big world. I’ve been searching out extraordinary places to share ever since.

What inspired you to become a film maker?

I spent my entire childhood searching around for interesting insects, animals, and plants. I love the natural world. I realized that my curiosity, and the skill of always having an eye out for beauty, transferred over very easily to the world of photography and videography.

What tip do you have for people who want to get into travel video?

I’ll give one tip for all creatives. Always be creating content for yourself. Life can get busy with paid work, but we all have to make a living. Forget about the money and views every now and again and make sure to be creating things that inspire you on the side, this is the secret to long-term success.

What’s your favorite travel film?

The opening message from the book/film The Beach has changed my life forever.

“So never refuse an invitation, never resist the unfamiliar, never fail to be polite and never outstay the welcome. Just keep your mind open and suck in the experience— And if it hurts, you know what? It’s probably worth it.”

Why are you a part of Travel Massive?

Travel Massive was the family I needed to lift me to my feet when I first got into Travel Blogging. The friendships and contacts I made there, still benefit me to this day.
