What happened on Sydney Travel Massive’s Private Yacht

Ever wondered what it would be like to have your own private yacht in Sydney Harbour? Well, that’s what Sydney Travel Massive did for their end of year December event.

Catch the video below for highlights from our “Yacht Massive” – featuring 30 tourism leaders from the Australian Travel Massive community. You can also check the photos on the Travel Massive Australia Facebook page.

Quick Q&A with Archie from OzCat Catamarans

The event was supported by OzCat Catamarans and we interviewed their co-owner (and Travel Massive member) Archie Acharekar about her journey of building a yacht charter business.

Q: How did you get in to sailing?

Pure determination! I was 14 still in Mumbai (India), when I started wanting to sail. I was part of an organisation called Sea Cadet Corps that produced some fabulous sailors who represented India at the Asian games and Olympics but the organisation  was apprehensive about allowing girls to sail. I questioned this a few times and they finally relented allowing me to be the first girl sailor from the organisation. At 16 I was crew on a cadet class dingy that won the nationals! Today over 600 girl cadets from all over India sail through this organisation.

Q: Do you ever get sick of sailing past the Sydney opera house every day?

Never ever! In 1991, I visited Sydney for the first time and fell in love with this city – my soul city. It was live at first sight! The harbour bridge and opera house remind that I am in a city that I wished to make my home for over 20 years.

Q: What’s the most memorable sailing trip you’ve done?

There are a few, but when we sailed Hestia (our first boat) from St Maarten in the Caribbean to Sydney over 7 months in 2013. It was an adventure a mix of happy times, sad times, scary times, fun times, angry times and most of all exciting times!!

Q: What made you decide to set up OzCat?

After marriage we realised that we had hardly any time for each S we were busy making revenue for others. Hence my husband suggested we quit our full time jobs to go to the Caribbean, buy a boat and sail it back, I asked what we would do with the boat once we arrived back in Sydney? And he answered, we start our own business. Combined together we have plenty of experience. So from not being able to see each other for all day we now see each other 24-7

Q: Tips for people who want to start their tourism business?

If you do something you enjoy and love you will succeed and the rest will follow! Remember Tourism and hospitality are about passion.
