Travel Massive Explored the City with Atlanta Movie Tours

The state of Georgia has announced 2017 to be the “Year of Film” to celebrate the many film and television products that have taken advantage of local tax incentives in the last few years.

Georgia-filmed movies were even nominated for six Academy Awards this year.

So for our February event with Travel Massive Atlanta, a few of us gathered at the offices of Atlanta Movie Tours, the only operator of film and television tours in the city. Their highly successful tours are themed to visit filming locations for The Walking Dead, The Hunger Games, and Gone with the Wind. They’ve also launched tours to visit locations associated with Marvel’s superhero films and significant African-American films. At the event, we dined on snacks from nearby No Mas Cantina and drinks from our friends at Explore Georgia and talked about our favorite Georgia movie moments. Some attendees went home with prizes like a Magic Mike XXL shirt signed by the cast!

One of their newest tours is the Castleberry Hill Backlot Tour, which is a walking tour that explores the neighborhood the company calls home. Among the projects filmed in the neighborhood alone are Captain America: Civil War, BET’s Being Mary Jane, Ride Along, The Boss, and The Walking Dead, among many others. In fact, you never know when you might see the familiar yellow production signs and PAs wrangling groups of extras.

Castleberry Hill has a unique history and is changing at a rapid pace. Once the city’s red-light district dubbed “Snake Nation,” the industrial area now sits in the shadow of the Georgia Dome and new Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Ground has been broken for a Hard Rock Hotel location. Cotton warehouses have been transformed to hip lofts and blank walls are now covered in murals documenting the area’s notable residents.

A number of art galleries also exist in Castleberry Hill, where locals and visitors alike enjoy the Second Friday Art Stroll. The annual chili cook-off is another favorite event. Dozens of businesses line Walker and Peters streets. Smoke Ring Barbecue, No Mas Cantina, Paschal’s, and Bottle Rocket are just a few worth checking out.

The National Historic Register-listed neighborhood was the perfect setting for our event and we can’t wait to see what happens next in this history-rich part of Atlanta.
