Roaming the world with Rachel Rudwall

This week we are featuring a Q&A with Rachel Rudwall – a member of our Los Angeles Travel Massive and host of “Epic Lists” which recently piloted on the Travel Channel. Not only is Rachel an avid traveler and adventurer – but also has on-camera host, producer, camera operator, speaker, writer and social influencer as part of her many accolades. Rachel has traveled the world over and has recently had her show “Epic Lists” pilot on the Travel Channel in the USA. We delved a little deeper into her experience with travel videos.

Rachel describes herself as an explorer who loves sharing the world with others! She does this as a TV Host, Director of Photography, Writer, and Social Influencer, and most enjoy projects that send her out into nature, providing a wealth of content for her website rachelroams.com.

How did you get in to travel video?

Back in college, I was studying International Relations and Foreign Languages with the intent of traveling the world and doing some good along the way. That plan evolvedwhen I was selected to be STA Travel’s first-ever “Ultimate World Traveler Intern.” I spent the next 12 weeks exploring 15 countries across Europe, Asia, and Oceania, creating travel media along the way (video, blogs and photography).

What tips do you have to be a great presenter on video?

Don’t make it about you! Who cares if your hair is blowing in the wind, or if your shirt doesn’t match your jacket? The goal is sharing a scene with your audience, so put your audience first. Think: “what would they want to see?”, then shoot with that in mind.

Watch Rachel presenting her expert tips below (view on YouTube).

What’s the favorite destination shoot you’ve done and why?

Mexico City is my favorite city in the world, so anytime I’m shooting there, I’m over-the-moon happy. It has some of the best food on the planet, more museums than any other city in the world, fascinating neighborhoods, colorful markets, and the friendliest people you could hope to meet. It’s an endless source of inspiration.

Where do you want to go next and why?

It has been a lifelong dream to explore the Himalayas, and I’m thrilled to say that I’ll be heading there for the first time this fall. I’ll be on assignment in the remote mountain kingdom of Bhutan, exploring the mountains, monasteries, villages and culture, and can’t wait to share the beauty with others on social media. I’ll be posting along the way at @RachelRoams, so I hope you’ll follow along!

How has the Travel Massive LA chapter helped you?

Being a part of a local Travel Massive chapter creates a tremendous sense of community with likeminded individuals. It’s grounding knowing that there are others around you that share the same love of the world. Beyond that, it’s always exciting to hear what other members are up to, and discuss potential joint projects!
