Hacking a Better Hotel Experience with Tnooz

Join Nick Vivion from tnooz.com at Homeaway’s plush HQ offices in Austin Texas, this January 27-28 for a hackathon to explore and innovate hotel technology.

Nick Vivion is the editorial director at tnooz.com, where he oversees content operations across their editorial and commercial arms. Prior to returning to tnooz, Nick was the Senior Brand Journalist at Sabre and the AVP of Operations at Zomato.

Tell us about tnooz, for members who haven’t heard about you before?

Tnooz (tnooz.com) is the brightest source of information for the travel and hospitality industries. We’ve been around since 2009, which makes us the original voice in travel media. And we’re still very much independent. We’re a much smaller team, which means that we must stay scrappy. This infuses our coverage with a deeper analysis as well as an honest edge.

Why are hackathons important for the travel industry?

Tnooz has been running hackathons for many years now. While there’s been a shift in the way that hackathons are seen, they still have one key function: to encourage developers to create new and unique projects on a company’s APIs. It’s not always easy to get uptake for a new API, and companies get ready test subjects when they participate in hackathons. There’s also a clear HR benefit.

Why hotels? What kinds of improvements are you looking for?

Hotels are some of the most complex organisms in travel. Operations are complex and guest expectations are higher than ever.

There are many ways that technology improves operations, both in the back office and for the guest.

Yet this proliferation of tech has created complexities in implementation for hotels. This hack is all about making technology work for hotels – and not the other way around.

What is unique about Austin for travel startups?

The Austin tech scene vibrates at a fairly strong resonance compared to others in the United States. It has that small town feel, yet the talent pool reflects how many large tech companies have offices there.

Austin is also a smart place for travel startups because the economic environment is conducive to good business.

Not to mention it’s halfway to nearly everything in the US – a great hub.

What other tnooz hackathons are coming up this year?

We’re working on a couple of other hackathons with industry associations. We’ve found that working within existing conferences really helps enhance the visibility of the projects that come out of the hackathon. Ultimately, we want to provide not just a way to bring new developers into travel but also to showcase their fresh and potentially disruptive ideas to audiences beyond tnooz.com.
