Event Recap – Travel Massive Hong Kong REBOOT 2018

Travel Massive Hong Kong recently held their first event of the year – Hong Kong Reboot 2018, where travel professionals got together to chat about the industry challenges and the future of Hong Kong’s tourism community.

This is event recap by Vimal Kumar Rai – chapter leader for Hong Kong. Vimal is new to Travel Massive but he’s been living in Hong Kong for 7 years now. Vimal is a consultant to travel retail businesses and a mentor to startups.

Here’s what he said about their first event for this year:

What’s with the whole “Reboot” thing?

The Hong Kong chapter had been quiet since early 2017 (the original chapter leader had since returned home to the US) so this was meant to be a low-key restart. It was simply a way to see how many people were so dedicated to Travel Massive that even without having been in constant engagement, they would show up.

Most importantly, this allowed us to keep the focus on deeper connections and conversations about the tourism industry in Hong Kong and the future of the community.

What was unique about this event? What stood out?

As this was the first event in over 18 months, the aim was to get to know this core group, and to brainstorm some ideas for our future events.

Being a small group it was easier to came up with good ideas and get feedback. There were also some clear networking and potential future business connections developed that evening. We already have some potential activities that we’re going to introduce to the Travel Massive community in Hong Kong in the next few months.

Who was there? Name drop some members!

We had Brian Kumbal of Travel Riot, Mariia Perelygina, a PhD student, Lies Vissers who is going to be our local sustainability expert, Maggie Lau of Sam the Local, famous local blogger Nam Cheah, Bennett Chen the resident tech-geek, and Marketer-extraordinaire Phil Ingram!

We were fortunate to also host Johannes and Jessie of Agorize Asia, with whom we are partnered for the Singapore Airlines AppChallenge.

What’s next for Travel Massive Hong Kong?

I’m already planning our next event in October. Without over-committing, I’m hopeful we are going to secure a hosting partnership with one of the biggest names in Hong Kong’s travel startup scene. I envisage that would entice a lot more people to attend, as well as to sign up to Travel Massive. Join our Hong Kong chapter to get updates for the future events.
