Toronto chapter turns 8, what’s next for the community? – Q&A with Will Tang

Happy birthday to our Travel Massive Toronto community! This August, the chapter celebrated its eigth birthday with a big event sponsored by St. Vincent & The Grenadines Tourism

To learn more about what’s next for the community, we interviewed Will Tang, one of the co-leaders of the Toronto chapter.

Will is a blogger at Going Awesome Places. Besides getting the Travel Massive community together in Toronto, his passion lies in telling stories, inspiring others to travel, writing detailed trip itineraries to help others plan their own trips, and providing helpful tips and tricks to travel smarter.

What are the top highlights from the past 8 years of running the chapter?

Every anniversary event is huge and I love how it brings together everyone in the community, celebrates our growth year to year, and is really just a big party.

Another highlight would be the opportunity to help our members level up through our workshop series. I love seeing how we support each other and keep making each other better.

How has the Toronto chapter evolved and grown over the past few years?

The chapter has grown tremendously over the years in more ways than one. In terms of pure numbers, we’ve been lucky that our membership has had an upward trend since the beginning.

The other part of our growth has been our experimentation with types of events that we run, from our bigger monthly events and also smaller size workshops that are put on by our very own members.

The Toronto Travel Massive community now has over 1,500 members and we’ve had total of 60 events over those eight years. We’ve partnered with various hosts and sponsors such as Tourism Toronto, Ontario Travel, the Jamaica Tourist Board, Booking.com, Skyscanner, visitBerlin, VisitBritain, the German National Tourist Office, CzechTourism, and more.

What motivates the team to connect Toronto’s travel professionals?

It’s incredibly rewarding to be able to help facilitate the networking between content creators and those that represent brands, PR, and destinations. My philosophy is that if we can make more members of our community successful by helping them make those connections, everyone wins in the long run.

How has Travel Massive helped your career in the travel industry?

I always tell people that Toronto Travel Massive is what gave me my start in travel blogging. It showed me that:

  1. There was way more people doing blogging in the city than I thought.
  2. There are seriously successful bloggers out there and I could be one of them some day.

It was through the friends I’ve made, connections in the community, and inspiration, that propelled me to keep building my blog and my brand.

What exciting plans do you have for 2019 to develop the chapter?

As we look forward to next year, we want to spend more of our efforts locking down on the events that are our bread and butter but also listen to our community for what they actually want.

This means mixing up our events to include a variety of formats including workshops, panels, casual mixers, and sponsored events.

In addition to this, we would like to grow our team. Currently, we’ve been running with a 3-person team but are looking forward to growing this to a larger team.

– Thanks Will, for the insights and special thanks to the other co-leaders Cristina and Melissa for making all of this happen!
