Round table – Montenegro Explores Creativity in Rural Tourism

Travel Massive Montenegro got together on November 17th in Berane, Northern Montenegro, to discuss the principles of creativity in rural tourism

This event recap was written by Kirsi Hyvaerinen, co-leader of Montenegro chapter. Kirsi is passionate about hands-on sustainability in travel and tourism. She has 20+ years of experience in helping destinations and businesses keep their promises.

The event was held in an unusual location that turned out to be an excellent place for the gathering – the meeting space of the local Fire Department in the city of Berane. The Regional Development Agency of Bjelasica, Komovi and Prokletije also provided some lovely local finger food – home made salty and sweet surprises, and amazing wild berry juice.

Best practices in rural tourism – from Spain to Montenegro

In his welcome words, Miki Korac from Berane’s Fire Department pointed out some principles of tourism’s safety and security. We discussed the importance of planning your trips well, especially when it comes to traveling in the mountains or on water, in order to prevent emergency situations.

After that, we started with our discussion on the topic of the day – creativity in rural tourism.

In October, Anastasija Rajic and Danka Sekularac of Erasmus+’s  E-meets group (Erasmus+ project) visited Malaga and the backcountry of Andalusia, Spain to see how tourism is done there. They gave us a short presentation on how to apply the good principles learnt in Spain to mountainous Montenegro.

The young people in the program start their careers in tourism by fostering entrepreneurial mindset and applying the principles of non-formal learning mobility between Montenegro and Serbia, on one side, and Slovenia, Germany, and Spain on the other.

The feedback

From accommodation and travel service providers to guides and project managers, we brought together an interesting mix of professionals who shared their experience.

Everyone was eager to propose and discuss ideas about the future development of Montenegro’s mountain regions. One example was a year-round calendar of mountain village activities that can help planning and promoting authentic experiences in the destination.

Massive thanks to Slavica Vukcevic and Jelena Krivcevic – co-presenters and moderators of the event, and everyone who joined us.
