This November, we reached out to our global database of travel industry professionals to understand what key issues are facing the market this year. More than 1,500 people responded. The results provide an exclusive sneak peak into the challenges and threats facing the online travel industry and indicate where possible opportunities lie.

Who took part in the survey?

Over two-thirds of people who completed the survey were from travel providers or intermediaries, including hotels, transportation, tour operators and OTAs.

Furthermore, half of our participants were C-level executives, with sales and marketing making up the next biggest proportion.

What were some of the most surprising findings?

Unlike other years, where digital transformation has won the top spot for industry priorities, this year the customer is the top priority for travel companies, with customer acquisition and online customer experience (CX) representing 52% of our respondents’ top priorities.

Could you name some of the key trends occupying the industry’s minds?

Big data and analytics as well as cyber-security are having an immediate impact on travel companies today. On the other hand, the survey shows that the industry does not perceive any immediate impact by blockchain and crypto currencies – they remain on the five-year horizon for most industry players.

What are they key challenges for travel companies?

Customer acquisition is the major headache for travel executives right now, across the board. Siloed data was considered a bigger issue in North America, while Europe and the Rest of World are struggling slightly more with skills shortages.
