bookitgreen: on a mission to revolutionize sustainable travel

bookitgreen is a new booking platform for sustainable holiday accommodations in various destinations around the world.

Moritz Hintze, bookitgreen’s founder is a member of Berlin Travel Massive and gets excited about everything related to sustainable development and start-ups. His pitch for bookitgreen won the 2018 Travel Tech Tournament.

We asked him some questions about how the company got started.

How did you get into the travel industry?

When I was a child, each year we went on vacation with my whole family to the organic farm Helchenhof close to Lake Constance in Southern Germany. After finishing my studies, I wanted to go on vacation and realized how difficult it is to find and book a sustainable holiday accommodation online.

That’s when I took a deeper dive into the topic of sustainable travel and decided to build a company with my technical co-founder Phillip in 2017. bookitgreen digitalizes and unifies existing sustainable holiday accommodations on one easy-to-use booking platform.

How does bookitgreen work and how does it tie into sustainable tourism trends?

bookitgreen enables travelers to rent out and book sustainable holiday accommodations in 30 destinations worldwide in a few clicks on a transparent booking platform that represents their values. You can book everything from organic farm-stays and luxury ecolodges to urban flats and travel #samebutgreen.

After organic food, renewable energy, and natural cosmetics, it is only a matter of time until the new lifestyle of conscious and sustainable consumption will also take over the travel sphere.

Our vision is to become the go-to platform for sustainable travel worldwide and thereby help making sustainable traveling easier and possible for everyone.

By the way, for each night booked via bookitgreen, we plant one tree to work together against the negative impacts of climate change.

What is unique about your product or service?

We are building a platform that makes it easy to find and book sustainable holiday accommodations around the globe. Until now, travelers had to pick up the phone, write emails or scroll through existing booking platforms until they maybe, accidentally, stumble upon a sustainable holiday accommodation.

Our common belief is that in the 21st century success is based on a triple bottom line. A state-of-the-art tech product, with a functioning and scalable business model in an impact-driven environment.

We and our guests value the sustainability of holiday accommodations and with bookitgreen, they finally have a platform where they stand out with their special value prepositions.

You’re currently raising capital via a crowdfunding campaign. Tell us more about this decision?

We realized over the past year that there are two major issues when trying to build a business that focuses on sustainable travel. On the one hand, the majority of the population is not yet aware that there are many ways to travel more sustainably and, on the other hand, it is very difficult to raise relevant amounts of money in this space.

With our crowdfunding campaign on Startnext (running until March 31, 2019) we aim to create this awareness and raise capital to match grants we received from the Austrian government to further develop bookitgreen into a sustainable business with a functioning tech platform.

It is great that we received six figure grants, but we need to match them with external investment to be able to deploy that money. Any and all support from Travel Massive members is therefore highly appreciated and helps us build a platform that is a sustainable alternative to existing ones.

Here’s the video for the crowdfunding campaign with German comedian Eckart von Hirschhausen:

What’s another travel company you admire and why?

In my opinion, Mapify is the only start-up that really changes the way we travel. The combination of an “Instagram like” experience when checking out new spots, planning whole trips with a few clicks, booking accommodations and flights that perfectly match the created plan and gathering experiences that are based on recommendations from other travellers and influencers is just amazing.

What the Mapify team has built within a year is just out of this world.

Let’s hope that we will soon be able to book sustainable holiday accommodations on bookitgreen, within the Mapify app.

Thanks Moritz, for sharing your insights!
