Naija Nomads: inspiring Nigerians to travel

Meet Mofe Runsewe, a young and inspiring Nigerian, who created an online travel company after an eye-opening trip to Morocco in 2011.

Mofe started her travel platform in 2015 due to lack of Nigerian travelers stories. There were no online resources that Nigerians could relate to and she wanted to change that.

Since then, Naija Nomads has evolved from a blog to a full company that provide all kinds of travel needs from content to experiences.

Read more about Mofe’s story and her view to the future.

How did you get into travel?

Funny story, I always traveled to the UK or the US as a child but my first trip outside the norm was to Morocco in 2011. I was studying for an Master of Law in Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) and my friends in class were planning a trip to Morocco. The ticket prices were too good to be true, so I decided to book the trip. I haven’t looked back ever since.

What tourism problems are you solving?

Some Nigerians don’t explore or travel enough because it’s believed our passport is very limiting and you are required to have visas for everywhere. Though this is true, there are over 45 countries a Nigerian passport holder can travel to which are visa free/on arrival. Your passport should not stifle your travel goals and dreams.

We curate group experiences at Naija Nomads, focused on destinations that are Nigerian passport friendly.

How are you creating a positive future for travel?

I am very particular about respecting cultures and customs everywhere, so my destination of choice is always well researched in relation to what’s acceptable and what’s not.

Supporting local business & communities is another way I’m impactful when traveling – whether it’s by joining a basket weaving class in Rwanda or getting Henna at a Henna Cafe in Morocco that gives free education and assistance to Moroccan people.

Where do you seek advice? Who’s your hero?

My family and close friends are my best advisers. They are my biggest critics and are always there to mold me to be better. My dad is my hero and he has thought me, directly or indirectly, to be fiercely independent, dogged, goal oriented and work hard for everything.

Thanks Mofe for sharing your story with us!
