Hostel Transformation: How CoDe Pod is transforming the hostel experience

With an Asian-inspired pod beds concept, CoDe Pod hostel is on a mission to combine comfort and safety for the modern traveler.

Andrew Lansdburgh shares the concept behind his CoDe Pod hostel project — a boutique hostel with pod beds and code entry system. Originally launched in Edinburgh five years ago, Andrew and his team expanded to Dublin and are on the hunt for more locations to launch.

CoDe Pod Edinburgh’s second site — developed on a former courthouse and jail — launches on July 31st, 2019 and our Edinburgh chapter are joining the opening.

How did CoDE Pod Hostels start?

It all started five years ago with The LoFT in Edinburgh, a cosy hostel of 32 guests in the heart of New Town.

CoDE is a great concept (Asian-inspired pod beds and code entry system doors and lockers) in a modern and industrial design thought around the comfort of our guests.

CoDE cares about the service it provides to their guests and hires the most welcoming and friendly staff out there.

What is special about the concept and makes your hostels stand out from the crowd?

While we still offer upper and lower beds in dorms, our pods offer total privacy and a courtesy curtain. Inside your pod, you have a USB socket, a light, a shelve, hooks and a hand rail.

All our doors can be opened with a personal code for extra security and our lockers as well, no padlocks needed. In general, we try to think of all these little details that will make our guests stay more comfortable.

Tell us about your self check-in app, Staypal?

We are always trying to keep up with the new technology and what is out there. We have developed a self-check-in app, and we are working with Staypal, which is a way for our receptionists to sell tours of our various partners in one click.

What are you working on with CoDE at the moment?

In Dublin, we’re working on the transformation of the former hostel to CoDE Pod hostel concept. We are more than halfway there and will be ready in the middle of August.

In Edinburgh, we are opening The CoURT hostel with 200 pod beds and 11 double rooms in a former court house and jail from the 19th century. We’re pretty excited about that.
