About the EU initiative

European Capitals of Smart Tourism is an European Union (EU) initiative, proposed by the European Parliament and implemented by the European Commission.

It recognises outstanding achievements by European cities as tourism destinations in four categories: sustainability, accessibility, digitalisation, as well as cultural heritage and creativity. The initiative aims to promote smart tourism in the EU, strengthen destinations, and facilitate the exchange of best practices.

Two competitions were organised by the European Commission:

  • The EU Capitals of Smart Tourism 2019 – Helsinki and Lyon.
  • The EU Capitals of Smart Tourism 2020 – Malaga and Gothenburg.

Both competitions showed big interest from EU cities in smart tourism. Nearly 40 cities from all across the EU applied in each of them. All shortlisted cities showed interest in working closer together on smart tourism.
