Cape Town connects local businesses in Hout Bay

Cape Town Travel Massive gathered last November to connect and support local small businesses in Hout Bay — a sea-side neighbourhood in Cape Town.

The event recap was written by Fuad Peters, Cape Town Travel Massive leader. He is passionate about tourism development & marketing and has 18 years of experience in the area. Fuad is the founder of tourism consultancy business – Cape Tourism Connect.

Hout Bay is one of the most diverse suburbs of Cape Town with people from across the globe living here. There is a big push towards supporting community-driven activities and local businesses.

The Travel Massive event was organized with the support of Hout Bay Tourism Connect who provided delicious food & refreshing drinks. Hout Bay Gallery was the venue partner. Hout Bay Vineyards shared their wine with us. Such collaborations are exactly what we as the Travel Massive community encourage.

Hout Bay’s local business scene

The Hout Bay Tourism Connect, funded via the Hout Bay Partnership, is made up of local tourism businesses in the area that are interested in helping to promote Hout Bay as a destination, through various campaigns and communal efforts. The aim is to get visitors to the region and to persuade them to stay for longer periods of time.

The Hout Bay Partnership’s purpose is to help transform Hout Bay into a place with much greater social and economic equality and inclusion, by fostering partnerships among organisations and individuals working to improve the area.

It serves as an umbrella organisation, maintaining a view of the entire development system –  mapping the needs, and identifying gaps and opportunities that can be addressed by forming strategic collaborations amongst relevant stakeholders: NGOs, government, civic organisations, community members and others.

The Hout Bay Partnership strives to harness the collective power of individual interventions to ensure meaningful and sustainable change.

Nadeema’s Seafood Truck — from sea to plate

This event marked the launch of Nadeema’s Seafood Truck, offering local street food and a new menu of Seafood Streetfood – from sea to plate.

Their story of generational families of being in the fishing industry in the seaside village of Hout Bay has now taken a turn to offer seafood via their foodtruck on the harbour to visitors and locals.

The venue – Hout Bay Gallery – is on the other end of the spectrum of experiences as a fine art gallery. Having a food truck launch their new menu with tasters to the travel industry was a way for us to show how collaborations can be made even with contrasting business set-ups.

Community shout-outs

New members Dev Jeavan & Johanna Swarts really enjoyed being able to meet other people in the industry and are looking forward to future events.

Claudia Chennells said it was her first Travel Massive event she has attended and found it a wonderful experience. Brent Thomas also attended for the first time this year and was happy to share new projects he has been working on for Hout Bay.
