Announcing the Winners of the Social Entrepreneurship in Tourism Competition 2019

The winners of the first Social Entrepreneurship in Tourism Competition, supported by Travel Massive, were announced at the Entrepreneurship Summit in Berlin on October 20, 2019.

Jury member Lisa Hübner Moreno summarizes the competition results for us. Lisa is a co-chapter leader at Travel Massive Berlin, a member of the Travel Massive core team and a marketing & PR specialist for the tourism industry.

What is the Social Entrepreneurship in Tourism Competition?

The Social Entrepreneurship in Tourism Competition is the first worldwide competition focusing on social innovation and entrepreneurship in the field of tourism.

The competition aims to address problems that are caused through tourism development and tries to find the best solutions to be implemented by the industry, governments, NGOs or local communities. The structure of the competition follows the United Nation’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals, which include gender equality, sustainable cities and communities, and climate action.

The first Annual Social Entrepreneurship in Tourism Competition was supported by a strong team of industry advocates, including Professor Dr. Claudia Brözel, ITB Berlin, Berlin Travel Festival, Stiftung Entrepreneurship and Travel Massive.

Tell us about the 2019 entries.

Participants were able to submit entries for a sustainable tourism idea or an existing project. In total, 51 ideas and 20 projects were submitted by entrepreneurs from 40 different countries around the world. We are thrilled that out of 71 ideas and projects, 36 were submitted by female entrepreneurs.

The platform provided many opportunities for exchange between participants and the numbers are impressive: Over a period of 10 weeks, over 40,000 comments were shared and more than 25,000 votes were cast.
