About the EU initiative

The European Capital of Smart Tourism is an European Union (EU) initiative, proposed by the European Parliament and implemented by the European Commission.

It recognises outstanding achievements by European cities as tourism destinations in four categories: sustainability, accessibility, digitalisation, as well as cultural heritage and creativity. The initiative aims to promote smart tourism in the EU, strengthen destinations, and facilitate the exchange of best practices.

Gothenburg and Málaga hold the European Capital of Smart Tourism 2020 title, following the 2019 winners, Lyon and Helsinki.
